The ACA recently issued a letter to the Journal of Pain and Symptom Management in response to a February 2008 review article written by chiropractic naysayer Edzard Ernst, MD, PhD. Titled “Chiropractic: A Critical Evaluation,” the article stated that chiropractic is not effective for any medical condition and is “not based on sound science.” Ernst also goes on to suggest that chiropractic is “rooted in mystical concepts.”
ACA President Glenn Manceaux, DC, fired back a letter to the editor, stating that Ernst “departs from solid science” in writing the review and, as a result, no attempt was made to present a balanced evaluation of the chiropractic profession. In closing, Manceaux noted, “I will be the first to say that critical evaluations are indeed a powerful tool when used in a constructive manner. However, Ernst fails to suggest new approaches or ideas for continued research, and instead presents nothing more than a lengthy editorial."
