Chiropractors recommend fitness products to their patients to help stabilize and strengthen muscles, and for balance and core training. The following are fitness products that are currently on the market.
ScripHessco, Bolingbrook, Ill, offers the Rehab and Wellness Station, a compact, total body rehabilitation center for in-clinic strength, balance, and core training. The Rehab and Wellness Station fits into a 6- x 6-foot space without disrupting the work environment. The station features a 3D multiplane of movement; proven Thera-Band protocols and programs; integrated office and home programs and training; a patient software library, which includes 170 band and ball exercises; and an exercise station floor base unit. The station also includes accessories that are easy to attach and four full-color exercise wall posters.
Dynatronics Corp, Salt Lake City, introduces the Star Trac Instinct Strength Dual Adjustable Pulley, which features the LockNLoad™ system that allows the user to select weights without pins. LockNLoad features an ergonomically designed on/off switch and an internal, patented pinless system that engages and disengages the weight of the user's choice with the flip of a switch. Other features include large instructional placards that identify 12 basic exercises that are ideal for an unsupervised environment, attachable accessories that allow additional exercises, a trigger-style pulley mechanism that allows one-handed easy adjustment, and a space-saving footprint that maximizes floor space.
Thought Technology, Plattsburgh, NY, introduces the ProComp5 Infiniti™ encoder for real-time, computerized biofeedback and data acquisition in any clinical setting. ProComp5 Infiniti is housed in an ergonomically designed case and requires only a USB port to connect to any IBM-compatible PC. ProComp5 Infiniti has the identical inputs as ProComp Infiniti, but omits the last three channels. The first two sensor channels provide signal fidelity (2048 samples per second) for viewing raw EEG, SEMG, EKG, and HR/BVP signals, while the remaining three channels sample data at 256 samples per second for slower signals such as respiration, temperature, and force. Not only does ProComp5 Infiniti capture data in real time by connecting directly to the PC via its fiber-optic cable, but it can also store data on a compact flash memory card for uploading later to the PC or use optional long-range compact flash module telemetry anytime it is desired. All the channels can be used with any combination of sensors, including EEG, EKG, RMS SEMG, skin conductance, heart rate, blood volume pulse, respiration, goniometer, force, inclinometer, torsiometer, and voltage input.
WAVE Manufacturing Inc
WAVE (Whole-Body Advanced Vibration Exercise), Windsor, On, introduces the WAVE Pro Elite, which features air wave technology, a patented vertical calibration of the vibration platform via inflation of the unit's air cushioning system. The feature ensures comfort and consistent dosimetry in vibration forces, regardless of the user's weight. The device also features vertical controlled vibration, which effectively eliminates the "shake, rattle, and roll" of other vibration exercise technologies on the market. Other features include Amber, an on-board personal trainer that guides users through a variety of protocols in exercise, massage, and flexibility. Also included are a large exercise surface area, preset programming, and variable frequency training, which are designed to continuously challenge and stimulate muscles.
Vonco Medical, Rehab, & Fitness
Vonco Medical, Rehab, & Fitness, Dallas, offers BioStep, the world's first semirecumbent elliptical cross-trainer. The elliptical motion is naturally smooth and continuous, which is very different from the jarring impact often associated with the stop-start motion that is common with other recumbent steppers. The BioStep has zero joint impact and biomechanically correct arm-, leg-, and ankle-motion-emulated natural walking patterns. The BioStep is low impact, which makes total-body exercise ideal for seniors. The motion helps strengthen the muscles that are important for mobility, walking, and balance. The unit features a rotating seat to 90° on either side; optimized seat height for wheelchair transfers and controlled hip flexion; self-powered, self-charging, cordless capability; 1:1 arm to leg motion for natural arm-swing rhythm; a large easy-to-use "quick start" display that features time, RPM, watts, calories, METs, total steps (standard models only), heart rate, and "smart" preprogrammed exercise profiles that automatically adjust effort levels; a utility holder that provides a convenient storage space for water bottles and hands-free reading; and integral contact and Polar® telemetry heart rate monitoring.
BodySport, Fort Worth, Tex, introduces Resistance Bands and Tubing, which are high quality, lightweight, and portable, and can be used alone or as part of an exercise program. Both products provide positive and negative force on the muscles to improve strength and range of motion, and can be used for rehabilitation, conditioning, and training. The Resistance Bands are available in eight progressive resistance levels, and come in 6- and 50-yard rolls. The Resistance Tubes are available in seven progressive resistance levels, and come in 25- and 100-yard rolls.
The Hygenic Corp/Performance Health Products
The Hygenic Corp/Performance Health Products, Akron, Ohio, offers Thera-Band® Resistance Band Loops, which provide the same resistance levels, system of progression, and preferred quality as the Thera-Band Resistance Bands and Tubing that have been used by physical therapists and other health care professionals for more than 30 years and have been endorsed by the American Physical Therapy Association. According to the company, field trials of Band Loops reported resistance to breakage and enhanced patient acceptance. Lower-extremity patients used Band Loops for resisted lateral walking, hip abduction, and ankle dorsiflexion. Upper-extremity patients used the Band Loops for shoulder abduction and external rotation. Thera-Band Band Loops are available in yellow, red, green, and blue. Each resistance level is offered in three lie-flat lengths, including 8 inches, 12 inches, and 18 inches. A box with 10 Band Loops is also available.

OPTP, Minneapolis, offers Kinesio Tape, an elastic athletic tape designed by Dr Kenzo Kase. Kinesio Tape is designed to be worn on the skin for an extended period of time (3 to 4 days) without irritation, as well as during strenuous exercise or hydrotherapy. The adhesive is heat-activated and does not leave any residue when removed. Kinesio Tape is latex-free, FDA approved, and patent-protected. Kinesio Tape has an elasticity of 140%, which matches the same basic elasticity found in one's skin and muscles, allowing Kinesio taping to work with your body. It allows full range of motion, support, and stability. Kinesio Tape can be used to correct muscle function, improve blood/lymph circulation, and reposition the subluxation joint. It also alleviates pain and facilitates lymphatic drainage by lifting the skin, resulting in pressure and irritation being taken off the neural sensory receptors. The tape is available in black, blue, red, and beige. It measures 2 inches x 4.5 yards.
