In researching spinal decompression therapy, I came across many opinions about the treatment. I communicated with chiropractors who said the treatment has helped relieve spinal pressure in many patients. A number of them also said that incorporating this therapy has helped their practices grow. But I also heard opinions against decompression, with some DCs disputing a report that claims an 86% success rate for the treatment based on the available research.1 Also, chiropractors have said the high price of decompression equipment has prevented them from using it in their practices.
But in looking at the various decompression equipment options out there, I have come up with two conclusions of my own. First, those who claim decompression is unaffordable are wrong. And second, after hearing from many chiropractors who say decompression has improved the lives of their patients and also increased their practices’ profits, I believe that decompression will be around for a while and that many chiropractic offices will be purchasing this equipment in the years to come.
Let’s take a look at pricing. Many brands of decompression equipment range from $30,000 to $100,000. But some products are actually quite affordable. Vishal Verma, DC, Fairfax, Va, leases his Dynatronics DX2—which has a purchase price around $10,000—for about $400 per month. Verma says the product has easily paid for itself as a result of the increased business the therapy has brought him. (For more on how decompression has helped Verma’s practice see his article "Turning Point: The Pressure is Off.") Another affordable decompression table has a $15,999 selling price. With a 10% down payment, the estimated monthly payment for a 36-month lease is $491. Also, purchasing or leasing decompression equipment can bring you a great tax benefit.
As for my second conclusion regarding testimonials from chiropractors and patients, I’m sure you know to investigate these claims and decide for yourself whether they are true. But I read many positive comments from patients who have seen great results from decompression, and also from chiropractors who have experienced big increases in business as a result of expanding their services with the equipment. The Web sites of some decompression companies feature testimonials such as one from a DC who is quoted as saying he uses a particular brand of decompression equipment on one-third of his patients and that he also uses it to treat his own disk problem.

Although I would like to see more current, peer-reviewed research showing the benefits of decompression therapy, I think you should strongly consider adding this treatment in your practice. So many DCs and patients have reported great results that decompression at least deserves a look. And yes, you can afford it.
