ACA Appoints Executive Vice President The American Chiropractic Association (ACA) Board of Governors has named Kevin P. Corcoran, CAE, as its new executive vice president (EVP).As a chiropractic patient for nearly 20 years, and the son-in-law of a chiropractor, I know firsthand the value that doctors of chiropractic bring to their patients and to the society at large, says Corcoran. We have a great story to tell, and I'm happy to be a part of it." For the past 11 years, Corcoran served as the membership director and later as the executive vice president of the National Association of Health Underwriters. Corcoran received a bachelors degree in business administration from Georgetown University, (Washington, DC) and in 2001, he earned the Certified Association Executive (CAE) designation from the American Society of Association Executives. Corcoran succeeds Garrett Cuneo, who will retire as executive vice president on September 30, 2005. | Foundation for Chiropractic Progress Forms Campaign Advisory Committee The Foundation for Chiropractic Progress has formed a Product and Services advisory committee to support the foundation in its multimedia Campaign for Chiropractic.Charles DuBois, president of Standard Process, and Perry Isenberg, partner and vice president of marketing at Performance Health, will co-chair the committee. "The Campaign for Chiropractic will strengthen the image of the profession by providing the recognition it needs and deserves, says DuBois. Widespread support for this initiative is vital to the future of the chiropractic community." As cochairs, DuBois and Isenberg will help create an image of chiropractic that motivates consumers to seek these services. They will also recruit people involved in the chiropractic profession to participate in the campaign, as well as offer advice and counsel, based on their marketing experience. The campaign is scheduled to kick off in September 2005. | OUM Awards Scholarships The OUM Chiropractor Program has awarded the Wellness Works Scholarships to four students: Adam Seay, DC; James Fowler, DC; Ron Carpenter, DC; and David Yates, DC. The scholarships were developed in 2004 to help fund the education of chiropractic students in the United States. They are awarded on a semiannual basis to current third- or fourth-year chiropractic students in good standing who have written an essay regarding the benefits of health maintenance through regular chiropractic visits.The essays can be viewed by visiting www.oumchiropractor.com. | Parker College Research Team Wins Award At the World Federation of Chiropractic (WFC) Eighth Biennial Congress, researchers from the Parker College of Chiropractic Research Institute claimed first place for the best scientific paper. The WFC honor is the highest research award given in the chiropractic profession.One of the most important contributions of the research was to document, for the first time, an underlying physiological mechanism to explain the pain-reducing effects of spinal manipulation, says Ronald L. Rupert, DC, director of the Parker College Research Institute. The award-winning research paper, titled, Spinal Manipulation Reduces IVF Inflammatory Pain, was among 180 research papers that were submitted for the competition. The research provides evidence that spinal manipulation decreases pain associated with nerve inflammation. The first-place paper will be published in an upcoming issue of the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics. A cash prize will also be awarded. |
