Paul B. Bindell, DC, president of Life Systems Inc, Rockaway, NJ

Paul B. Bindell, DCPaul B. Bindell, DC, is president of Life Systems Inc in Rockaway, NJ, which has developed the ChiroPad, ChiroOffice, and ChiroSuite. These innovative software programs allow chiropractors to handle appointment scheduling and all forms of billing, including electronic claims. Bindell talks to Chiropractic Products about the development of these programs and about the industry.

What is the history of Life Systems Inc?
Life Systems began in 1991 as a proprietorship that I soley owned. At the time, I had been using computer software from other companies, but none of the programs did everything that I wanted and needed a computer system to do. The goal was to create a program that eliminated the need for the staff to pull and put away files. This was accomplished by the development of ChiroPad, which now eliminates at least 90% of paper filing. Simultaneously, it was necessary to have an office-management program that could handle appointment scheduling and all forms of billing, including electronic claims. The ChiroOffice program takes care of the scheduling, billing, and electronic claims, which are free to the doctor. And since ChiroOffice recalls every claim, it eliminates the filing of HCFA duplicates.

How did the ChiroSuite idea come to fruition?
ChiroSuite is the growth and maturation of ChiroPad and ChiroOffice into a unified system that increases office efficiency. It was not enough that each program alone was the best in its class; it was necessary that the two programs communicate with each other to increase office productivity. ChiroSuite increases the functional ability in the office by seamlessly integrating ChiroPad and ChiroOffice. A single entry puts a new patient into the entire system. Entering a diagnosis in the documentation means that the diagnosis is instantly present for insurance billing. When the doctor enters the services provided in his adjustment/treatment room, the documentation generates the charges that appear at the front desk. Pop-up messages entered in either program appear in both programs. And prior to each insurance billing, each office can generate a report to verify that the doctor has entered documentation for each date of service for each patient.

Tell us about your commitment to the chiropractic profession.
Chiropractic is the profession for me. I graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractic in 1975; and since 1976, I have continued to serve the profession in my active practice in Rockaway. As the founder and guiding light of Life Systems, I have devoted myself to the profession. The result is that Life Systems is intensely devoted to the chiropractic profession, and the development of Life Systems’ software products has been and continues to be focused on helping each doctor have the most efficient and successful practice possible.

What do you see for the future of chiropractic?
The profession of chiropractic finally has a truly optimistic future. For too many years, chiropractic suffered as a result of the public divisiveness within the profession. Now, we are finally accomplishing real unity from the ground up. As the profession grows, computer tools for record-keeping and office management are needed more than ever. Life Systems is here to provide the software tools that will make each chiropractic office successful, and it is those offices that drive us toward professional unity. The future of chiropractic looks fantastic! CP
