Palmer Researchers Honored
Two researchers at the Palmer Center for Chiropractic Research, Monica Smith, DC, PhD, associate professor, and William Meeker, DC, MPH, Palmer vice president, have been honored by prestigious health organizations.

 Monica Smith, DC, PhD

Smith received the K01 Research Scientist Development Award from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), which will help further her research training and develop collaborative research in complementary and alternative medicine-related health services and health economics. She has also been accepted into the postdoctoral and mid-career research fellowship training program at the University of California in San Francisco (UCSF), where she will be working closely with research fellows and investigators at the UCSF Institute for Health Policy Studies, the Osher Center for Integrative Medicine, and the Center for Health Professions.

“Undertaking this NIH-funded K01 development and research program at UCSF will position me to create and contribute to furthering opportunities for advancing our knowledge and evidence about the actual and potential role of chiropractic and integrative care within the overall health care system,” Smith says .

 William Meeker, DC, MPH

Meeker has been appointed to the ad hoc chiropractic work group subcommittee of the Chiropractic Advisory Committee for the US Department of Veterans Affairs. His work will consist of reading reports, making recommendations in a series of conference calls, and participating in a meeting in Washington in 2005.

“It is an honor to represent chiropractic on this prestigious work group,” Meeker says. “I have enjoyed working with my colleagues from other health professions on similar advisory panels, and I look forward to being a part of this team that will assist VA officials in making important decisions about the role of chiropractic research in VA institutions.”

COCSA Receives Support From Grant Program
At a recent New Orleans convention, the Congress of Chiropractic State Associations (COCSA) received a $11,250 donation from Foot Levelers’ State Association Grant Program.

Janet Jordan, COCSA executive director, and Kent Greenawalt, president and CEO, of Foot Levelers.

“We are honored to support the good work of COCSA and its member association,” says Kent Greenawalt, Foot Levelers president and CEO. “The Foot Levelers Grant Program was designed to enhance and strengthen the profession. We are committed to chiropractic.”

The 3-year agreement offers an all-expense-paid speaker for the association’s annual convention, marketing and PR services associated with the convention, complimentary on-site seminar assistance by Foot Levelers’ staff, an annual $1,500 donation to the association for the duration of the agreement, and an annual $500 donation in the association’s name to COCSA.

“The Foot Levelers’ Grant Program is an incredible resource for our state association members,” says Janet Jordan, COCSA executive director. “The professional expertise of its speakers’ bureau, as well as the financial and marketing support, make it a win-win for everyone involved. The benefit to the Congress and state associations is immeasurable.”

During the ceremony, covaledictorians Tim Cole, from Tulsa, Okla, and Juan Conde, from Delray Beach, Fla, were honored for completing their studies with a 4.0 grade point average. Salutatorian Allan Lindsley, from Bloomer, Wis, was also honored for his academic achievement.
