Gonstead Student of the Year Award
Ed Roberts, a student at Life Chiropractic College West, recently received the national Student of the Year award from the Gonstead Clinical Studies Society.

Roberts earned his BS degree in mechanical engineering and his MBA from Pepperdine University. Before entering Life West, Roberts was employed for 11 years as a product design engineer for the Rocketdyne Division of Boeing North America, Canoga Park, Calif.

Along with his chiropractic studies and his clinical experience, Roberts has been president of the college’s Gonstead Technique Club for more than 2½ years.

Like all past recipients, Roberts’ name was submitted as a candidate to the Gonstead Clinical Studies Society’s board of directors by field doctors and/or school faculty. This award is given to people who have demonstrated outstanding service to the profession for their commitment to the Gonstead work. The students have generally served as president or vice president of the school's Gonstead Club.

Past recipients have gone the extra mile to study the Gonstead Technique to where they understand it well enough to teach it to their fellow students. In addition, they have been instrumental in assuring the success of visiting Gonstead doctors with workshops and symposiums being held on campus. They are usually responsible for keeping in contact with all Gonstead seminars throughout the world and for creating enthusiasm among fellow students to attend these seminars.

Without fail, recipients of this award, have gone on to become highly respected and successful chiropractors.

Chiropractic Truck Stop

At the Smithton Travel Center, a truck stop approximately 25 miles south of Pittsburgh, truck drivers can take a healthy break from long hours of driving.

Paul Boris, DC, operates the Boris Chiropractic Center, where he provides chiropractic services to truck drivers, as well as local residents.

“A lot of truck drivers see chiropractors because of the stresses of their job,” says Boris. “Many have low-back and side pain from sitting so long.”

Boris has also seen a variety of sprains and broken limbs since some truck drivers unload their own trucks.

The center is open until 8 pm on weekdays and from 1–3 pm on Saturdays to accommodate drivers’ schedules. According to Boris, his clinic usually becomes the regular clinic the drivers visit because many chiropractic practices are not open late hours or on the weekdays, when truck drivers might actually be at home or in their hometown.

In addition to providing chiropractic services, Boris has been conducting Department of Transportation (DOT) physicals and drug testing at a truck driving school. Expanding his services helps to provide truck drivers with services they need, in addition to treatment they might not be able to afford as frequently, such as chiropractic adjustments.

“In today’s chiropractic, you have to diversify,” says Boris.

Chiropractic Milestone Celebrated in Puerto Rico
The Commonwealth of Puerto Rico recognized chiropractic as a profession 50 years ago last November. The Puerto Rico Chiropractic Association and the Puerto Rico Chiropractic Board of Examiners commemorated 50 years at a gala in San Juan, the capital city of Puerto Rico.

As the keynote speaker, Fabrizio Manicini, DC, president of Parker College of Chiropractic, encouraged growth in the profession, especially among Latinos. He spoke in Spanish, his native language, and stressed the importance of a clear message to invite the Hispanic population to participate in chiropractic health and wellness. The honorable Antonio Faz Alzamora, President of the Puerto Rican Senate, also addressed the crowd, pledging local government’s support to chiropractic.

Edel Diaz, president of the Puerto Rico Chiropractic Association said, “It has been 50 years of great achievements, and on that strong foundation, we are confident that a bright future awaits chiropractic in Puerto Rico. It has been a real privilege to have Dr Mancini and Mr Faz Alzamora at this historical celebration.”

Duke Short Joins ACA’s Legislative Team
Duke Short, DC, has agreed to join the American Chiropractic Association’s (ACA) legislative team as a special legislative consultant. Short has more than two decades of Capitol Hill experience, with many of those years spent as a senior advisor to the United States Senate Judiciary Committee.

Short has been instrumental in helping the ACA achieve legislative victories for the chiropractic profession. The most recent victories include chiropractic inclusion in the National Health Service Corps (NHSC) student loan reimbursement program, the Department of Defense (DoD), and the Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA).

“It’s difficult to put into words what it means to have someone like Duke Short fighting for the chiropractic profession,” said Daryl D. Willis, DC, president of ACA. “He is one of the most highly regarded people among members of the US Senate and he will be an invaluable addition. We are honored to have him take on this new role with us.”

ACA plans to use Short’s tremendous experience and expertise immediately as the association seeks to advance its 2003 legislative agenda.
