The AHC Honors Greenawalt | Monte Greenawalt, DC, founder and president emeritus of Foot Levelers Inc, Roanoke, Va, was presented the Association for the History of Chiropractic (AHC) 2002 Lee-Homewood Heritage Award at the AHC Annual Conference on April 13, 2002 in Portland, Ore, by AHC President P. Reginald Hug, DC. This annual award is given to a living person who has made a distinguished career contribution of lasting significance toward the advancement of chiropractic.Greenawalt is a 1948 graduate of Lincoln Chiropractic College, Indianapolis, and opened his first practice in the basement of a bank building. Greenawalt is best known for his invention and development of custom-made, flexible foot orthotics manufactured and distributed by Foot Levelers Inc, founded in 1952. The company has donated more than $3.5 million to chiropractic colleges, state and national associations, chiropractic research, and the Alliance for Chiropractic Progress. The AHC is a nonprofit membership organization committed to exploring and preserving the heritage of the chiropractic profession. In addition to its annual conference, the AHC publishes Chiropractic History, a scholarly journal indexed by the National Library of Medicines Medline and Bibliography of the History of Medicine, and the Chiropractic Library Consortiums Index to the Chiropractic Literature. | Hoffman Named ICA Chiropractor of the Year | The International Chiropractic Association (ICA), Lake Success, NY, named Bob Hoffman, DC, the ICA 2002 Chiropractor of the Year in recognition of his efforts to promote the health benefits of chiropractic care internationally. The award was announced at the ICA board of directors and representative assembly annual meeting in Arlington, Va, on May 19, 2002.When told of the award, he reacted humbly by quickly turning the conversation away from himself and back to his longstanding mantra: There has never been a better time to be a chiropractor! He also spoke of the honor of being president of an organization that for so many years has been the philosophical conscience of chiropractic. Hoffman said his focus was to put the I back into the ICA by continuing to build a global presence and increasing communications with other chiropractic organizations for a cohesive and harmonious existenceeventually to reach a unified profession. Hoffman is currently the president of the Masters Circle, a personal and practice development company, and was the 20002001 ICA president. He has spent more than 20 years in service to the organization and to the profession. | Sherman College Grants ODell Honorary Degree Clair W. ODell, DC, PhD, accepted an honorary Doctor of Chiropractic Humanities (DCH) degree in recognition of his commitment to the chiropractic profession and to Sherman College, Spartanburg, SC. During Sherman Colleges June commencement ceremony, President Jerry L. Hardee, EdD, presented ODell with a framed DCH degree and a gold medallion bearing the Sherman College logo. ODell then presented the commencement address to the graduates. A 1936 graduate of Palmer College of Chiropractic, Davenport, Iowa, ODell practices in Southgate, Mich, and continues to write, travel, and lecture about the benefits of chiropractic care. He is now in his 65th year of practice. A charter member of the International Chiropractors Association, ODell was instrumental in the formation of the American Chiropractic Association (ACA) and was the first president of the Straight Chiropractic Academic Standards Association. He was chairman of the committee that brought about the antitrust lawsuit against the American Medical Association in the 1970s and 1980s. He also assisted in getting chiropractic licensing laws passed in Massachusetts, New York, and Oklahoma. ODell is a giant in the chiropractic profession, Hardee says. He was around during the turbulent times and took many personal risks to ensure that the philosophy espoused by DD and BJ Palmer remained intact. Having assisted so many individuals to become chiropractors and to grow in the field is a tribute to his commitment and perseverance for the profession that he loves dearly. ODell was honored in January with the Lifetime Service Award at the Parker Seminars 50th anniversary event in Las Vegas, named the Humanitarian of the Year by the World Chiropractic Alliance in 2000, and cited for his service to the profession and to his patients. ODell has also been named Chiropractor of the Year and Career Advisor of the Year by Sherman College. In addition, he is a member of the International Board of Governors of the World Chiropractic Alliance and the Sherman College Board of Regents, a group dedicated to supporting quality straight chiropractic education.
